What Are They?
First off, let us start by saying that we love Veeam! In a nutshell, Veeam is an award winning backup and replication software for virtual environments. Originally built to protect VMware environments, Veeam has evolved to also support backing up Hyper-V servers as well. It is synonymous with virtual server backup and more important, recovery. At VMhosts we leverage Veeam backup and replication in three ways:
- Hosted cloud backups – Veeam is deployed and ready to go. Just tell us what you want backing up and we’ll configure this for you.
- On-premise deployment – Veeam software is deployed locally on premise at your offices.
- Off-site backup with the new cloud connect – data is offloaded to your own secure slice of the cloud without the need to run a dedicated hosted backup repository.
Why do I need it?
Quite simply if you run virtualisation in your business, you probably want to protect it in the best possible way. Veeam is an innovator in virtual backup and recovery with impressive features such as instant recovery and file level restores. Veeam often tops the list when it comes to fast and effective backup software.

Our Veeam experts are here to offer help and support to ensure you are getting the most out of your backup and recovery. After all, many companies now have to prove not only that their critical data and servers are protected, but that they are also going to be able to get that data back whether it be a single file, or an entire server.
SaaS applications such as Google’s G Suite and Microsoft Office 365 are popular because they’re easy to use, highly scalable, standardize employees on the same applications like Word or Excel, and are relatively inexpensive. However, SaaS apps don’t deploy and manage themselves. Additionally, SaaS applications require data protection for business and compliance, just like any other mission-critical app.
There’s a common misconception among SaaS users that backup isn’t necessary for their data because it exists in the cloud. However, this is patently untrue. SaaS applications are just as vulnerable to data loss as on-premise apps. Why? Because the #1 cause of data loss is human error. People delete stuff, open phishing emails, accidentally download malware and more. SaaS vendors are unable to distinguish if certain user actions are done in error or deliberately.
Other scenarios where customers could lose data include:
- Malicious deletion by a disgruntled employee or outside entity.
- Malware damage or ransomware attacks.
- Operational errors such as accidental data overwrites.
- Lost data due to cancelled app licenses.
Data Protection Responsibilities
This Shared Responsibility model means that many providers don’t offer
any guarantees around restores and that you’re on your own should
attacks like ransomware strike. In fact, most advise their customers to
implement a backup strategy using native or third-party tools. Take for
example, this best practice advice from the Salesforce SLA:
Salesforce: Salesforce maintains a copy of customer data for
disaster recovery purposes but it is important for customers to
develop a data backup and recovery strategy as part of their overall
data management and security model. The Salesforce Data Recovery
service is an expensive and time-consuming process and should only
be used as a last resort when no other copy of the data is available.
In addition, Microsoft makes it clear where their responsibility ends
when it comes to things like deprovisioned user account data:
Except for free trials, Microsoft will retain Customer Data stored
in the Online Service in a limited function account for 90 days after
expiration or termination of Customer’s subscription so that Customer
may extract the data. After the 90-day retention period ends,
Microsoft will disable Customer’s account and delete the Customer
Data. The Online Service may not support retention or extraction of
software provided by Customer. Microsoft has no liability for the
deletion of Customer Data as described in this section.
