Remove Dark Web Data?

Is it possible to remove your data from the Dark Web? We look in to how best to protect yourself if you find your data has been leaked on the Dark Web!

One of the common questions we get asked when reviewing what data has been found on the Dark Web is whether that data can be removed?  Removing personal data from the dark web is nearly impossible due to its decentralised and anonymous nature.

Understanding the Dark Web

The dark web is a hidden segment of the internet, accessible only through specialised tools like the Tor browser. While it offers privacy benefits, it also often serves as a marketplace for illicit activities, including the trade of stolen personal data. Unlike the normal web, the dark web isn’t indexed by standard search engines, making it challenging to monitor or control what happens to your information.

Challenges in Data Removal

Once personal data is leaked onto the dark web, it spreads rapidly across various platforms, market places and forums. The lack of a central authority and the anonymous nature of these platforms make it virtually impossible to trace and delete all instances of the compromised data. Plus the people running these market places don’t really care for requests to remove information.

Protective Measures

While complete removal isn’t feasible, the following steps can help protect you and your identity or your staff identities:

  • Monitor the Dark Web: That way you are informed if a breach occurs which might affect you or your business’ data.

  • Change Compromised Passwords: Immediately update passwords for affected accounts, ensuring they are strong and unique.

  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Adding an extra layer of security can prevent unauthorised access even if login credentials are compromised.

  • Place a Freeze/Flag: Contact your bank, mobile phone provider and other organisations to place a flag on affected accounts so they cant be changed. This is especially important to block attempts at sim swapping.

While it’s challenging to erase personal data from the dark web, adopting these strategies can significantly reduce potential risks and enhance your overall digital security.
