5 Cyber Security Myths That Could Put Your Small Business at Risk

We look at the 5 Cyber Security risks you've probably heard, and whether these are myths, or actually they're a reality!

When running your small business, it’s sometimes hard to be able to see the value in cyber security. It doesn’t add any productivity, doesn’t make your product or service any better, and you already have the basics in place (maybe!). Plus, you’ve probably heard the following myths so think you’ve ticked the box on cyber security… Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Let’s look closer at some of the myths and see if actually they are a reality…

Myth #1: “My Business Is Too Small to Be a Target”

   – Reality: Hackers often target SMBs because they have weaker defences and are easier to compromise.

   – Solution: Basic protections like multi-factor authentication (MFA) and employee training are a great start to keeping your business safe and are inexpensive.

Myth #2: “Antivirus Software Is Enough”

   – Reality: Modern threats require layered security. Endpoint protection, network protection, vulnerability management, log monitoring and M365 security.

   – Solution: Review the protection in place and ensure you have the appropriate layers. Speak to an expert if you need help to review your current protection. We can help!

Myth #3: “I’ll Know Immediately If I’ve Been Hacked”

   – Reality: Many breaches go undetected for months and it’s this which allows the threat actor to exfiltrate company, employee and customer data. It’s also because of this it makes it harder to repair the damage.

   – Solution: Monitoring tools to look for the early signals that a breach has occurred. This will allow you to act sooner and limit any damage or data loss.

Myth #4: “Cyber Security Is Too Expensive for My Budget”

   – Reality: Cost-effective measures exist and many protection features are included as part of your M365 subscription, they just need configuring.

   – Solution: Prioritise low-cost, high-impact fixes and the already included protection which just needs setting up.   These include MFA, Conditional Access and Staff Training.

Myth #5: “My Employees Would Never Fall for a Scam”

   – Reality: Phishing attacks prey on human error and people are sadly the weakest link. Its so easy to fall for some of the attacks its only a matter of time until someone is too busy, distracted, has not been trained well enough or simply just doesn’t spot the signs

   – Solution: Regular security awareness training is a very cheap but every effective way to gain protection on the front line.

Cyber Security doesn’t have to be scary or bothersome and it doesn’t have to be expensive. With some simple steps you can gain a lot of protection to keep your business secure.
