VMhosts was started in 2005 by Michael, initially as a proof of concept demonstrating multi-tenanted possibilities of VMware whilst working in his first full time job since leaving College. Ultimately, this concept developed into what is now more commonly known as Cloud or Infrastructure as a Service.
Using Google pay for click advertising, the proof of concept soon developed into multiple servers hosted with Rapid Switch in Maidenhead, and in 2010 Michael quit his job to work at VMhosts full time. With demand ever growing, we soon expanded in to dedicated full racks across multiple datacentres.
In 2015 we moved into our own office space located just outside of Cambridge. Our service offerings also expanded, specialising in IT Managed Services which incorporated many elements of our hosted offerings, consultancy, infrastructure support and day to day IT requirements and support. We soon expanded into a second office as the team grew.
Time has soon flown by and whilst we fully embrace modern day working practices with hybrid and fully remote workers, we needed more space to grow and moved to our new office in Snailwell in 2024.
Funnily enough, the office we now own is the very same office Michael started his first full time job back in 1999 and where he created the proof of concept using VMware. We have made a lot of changes, but we still carry the same ethics of our friendly and flexible approach which was part of the service all that time ago.
VMhosts has always felt like joining a family, with 5 members of the team from Michaels first full time job now working at VMhosts too!

Once a business has migrated key services to these always on services they become dependent on their availability and make the assumption the platform is secure by default.
