Veeam launched Veeam Backup and Replication V13 (as of 19th November), and it brings a wave of improvements. As always, security is front and centre and the improvements take Veeam to even higher levels of protection for business. Ransomware resilience has been strengthened with expanded immutability options across more storage platforms, including support for additional object storage providers. This means it is now easier to layer immutability across your backup strategy without being locked into specific hardware choices. V13 also adds improved anomaly detection and monitoring to help spot suspicious activity in backup behaviours earlier.
Performance has seen a boost too. Backup, replication and restore operations benefit from enhanced processing efficiency, which helps reduce job run times and shortens recovery windows. For businesses with large virtual estates or high daily change rates, these performance gains can be especially noticeable when running multiple concurrent tasks. V13 also optimises how it handles large databases and high churn workloads.
There is also a renewed focus on cloud. V13 expands capabilities for Microsoft 365 and other SaaS workloads by improving API handling, scaling and reporting. Linux support continues to grow with V13, offering more native integration and refined performance for Linux based backup proxies and repositories. This is great news for businesses moving towards more open source and container based infrastructure. A new Linux based VBR appliance is available now too which is another step towards reducing MS licensing costs.
Management has been improved with a new web interface. Plus a new optional Active/Passive cluster feature is available. Veeam V13 feels like a release designed for modern hybrid environments, giving businesses stronger protection, better performance and more choice in how they build their backup strategy.
However, we do recommend caution if you are already running Veeam as upgrades to major releases can sometimes unearth bugs and issues.
